Some thoughts on the list.
There are many ways to look at this list, which serves as a unique window in understanding the collective psyche of the younger Chinese audience.
The most obvious fact is Hollywood’s dominance in the world of cinema, as it makes up nearly half of all movies on this list. Aside from the United States, Japanese movies also have a strong standing, reflecting the country’s successful influence on modern Chinese culture.
In total 19 countries appeared on this list, which in my personal opinion, reflects that the Chinese audience welcomes diversity in culture and art.
It’s slightly surprising to see no Russian/Soviet movies in this list, as the country heavily influenced Chinese art in the early PRC era.
The three Chinese regions of the Mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan is also worth a closer look. Traditionally, Hong Kong has been a high ground for culture, exemplified by its 20 movies on this list. However, 16 of the listed Hong Kong movies were made in the 20th century, and only 1 was made in the 2010s. This suggests that Hong Kong is losing its luster as the most vibrant movie market in China.
Taiwan movies share a similar trend. Out of the 6 movies on this list, 3 were made in the 1990s, 2 in the 2000s, and 1 in the 2010s.
Contrary to Hong Kong and Taiwan, South Korea’s most celebrated movies are closer to the present. All but one South Korean film on this list are made in the 2010s.
The list also reflects many differences between the preference of Chinese audiences and Western audiences, which is better gauged by IMDB. Many high-ranking movies on this list actually received mixed or even negative reviews from Western critics. There are opposite examples, though those examples may not have been included in this list. In general, Chinese audiences demonstrated a preference for wholesome movies that celebrated romantic love or love between family members.
If there are any shortcomings in this list, it lacked representation of movies made prior to the 1990s, this is likely due to the relatively young age of Douban users.
